Arcade Game

Book by John”KryFar” Logsdou, Though the Book is gone, the Chapter Code Examples still exist. I am attempting to “Teach” his book, and Build his Arcade Game anew, with the Current PureBasic compiler.

Chapters 1-4 are in Video 1 – Here I show you how to set up the PureBasic IDE, for easy Code reference to the PureBasic Manual. Then we proceed to build the first 3 code examples from the book. Three “Hello World” screens starting with a simple console window, then a Windows Screen, and finally building a Graphics Windowed Screen.

Chapter 5 – Covers decision logic in PureBasic. This will be extremely important in any programming project. This section contains FIVE code sheets, one for each: If-Then-Else, For-Next, While-Wend, Repeat-Until, and Really-End. Focus is ALL about Decision making in code.

Chapter 6 – Introduction to Arrays. Arrays are one of the more advanced items in any language. They give you ways to group and organize vast amounts of data, cleanly, intelligently, and provide easy access to the data. In this chapter we begin our exploration of arrays, much will build upon this foundation. And these will become the basis of just about every programming project you will ever have!

Chapter 7, Part 1. This video is 38 minutes long. I’m going to cut it into 2 pieces and upload it to YouTube, The download will will download ALL Code in Combined Video. Topics are Structures, Timing, Random Numbers, Objects, and see the beginnings of Animation.

Chapter 7, Part 2. The remainder of Chapter 7 here I cover Lists vs. Array. We cover Procedures, Variable (Array & List) Scope, Procedures, Structure Inheritance.

Chapters 9, 10 Are ALL in one Video. Yes, I am skipping Chapter 8 in Total, there is NO need to introduce anything in Chapter 8. Were going to look into Procedures, Program Organization, Project Organization, Including Code Sheets into our project, and more. This is a Long Video, but it covers all the information in the remaining Chapters.

Book Part II – Building Game tools Chapters 11-17

Up until now you have been learning the fundamentals of programing and the basics of PureBasic Syntax. Now we going to USE all this new knowledge and start to play with Sprites. So what is a sprite? These are the Images of Games, not static images, but somewhat intelligent Images, they know when they collide with other sprites!

Chapter 11 – Drawing Multicolor Lines, Squares, Ellipses

Chapter 12 – Displaying Sprites

Chapter 13 – Spinning Balls bouncing off walls-Now things begin to really Fun!

Chapter 14 – Sprite Collisions, we create an automated game!

Chapter 15 – Keyboard, Mouse, and Joystick

Chapter 16 – Sounds, Multiple Sounds, Music

Chapter 17 – Frames Per Second, using EllapsedMilliseconds()

Chapter 19 & 20 – There are NO Exercises for chapter 18, Chapter 20 he Presents his “library” MapLib.pb Code Sheet. This code sheet contains only Procedures, no forms nothing to display. The code is Commented Magnificently! Chapter 19 about ZOrder, so far you have seen X (Side to Side), and Y (Up and Down), so Z Order is Front to back. For items to collide they Both must be on the Same Z-Order.

The Book Examples are complete, use the Link below to down load the Whole Game Package Including the Level Editor (Written in Blitz Basic), and the PDF of the Book. And the Final Game Code Modified and fixed to Compile and Execute with Current PureBasic.

Bonus Video & Download – Using Modern Game controllers in PureBasic, The Code is NOT Mine, I downloaded it from the PureBasic Forum. It comes with a DLL and PureBasic code sheet…it just works!
